Zyprexa (olanzapine), manufactured by Eli Lilly, is the brand name of a drug used to treat schizophrenia, acute, mixed, or manic episodes of bipolar disorder. It was approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996. This new atypical antipsychotic drug reduced some side effects without elevating white blood cell count in users. The active ingredient in Zyprexa, olanzapine, is believed to work by opposing the transmission of serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin is involved in the regulation of sleep, appetite, sexual desire, and mood, while dopamine helps control movement, cognition, and motivation.
While Zyprexa did reduce or eliminate the side effects of many of the older atypical antipsychotic drugs, the chemical make-up of the drug was associated with other, potentially more harmful side effects such as hyperglycemia, diabetes, ketoacidosis, and pancreatitis by Zyprexa users. A paper written in late 2001 for the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry reports the FDA has been alerted of warnings of 19 case reports of diabetes associated with the use of Zyprexa.
Studies have shown that Zyprexa has a dangerous side effect ie. an increase in the occurrence of diabetes mellitus type II associated with usage. This has proven to be fatal in a number of patients.
In 2003, the FDA mandated a warning label for the prescription drug warning healthcare professionals and consumers about the diabetes effects of Zyprexa usage.
Recent court documents have shown that Eli Lilly knew about these new dangerous side effects associated with Zyprexa as early as 2002 but chose not to reveal them so that they could continue to enjoy the huge profits the drug was making for the company.
