Once again, Johnson & Johnson is in the news for a medication which produces abnormal or dangerous side effects.
Xarelto is a anticoagulant blood thinner medication designed to treat and prevent blood clots. Generally prescribed as an alternative to Warfarin, it is also supposed to lower the risk of strokes in people with atrial fibrillation.

Unfortunately, one of the side effects is that the medication produces uncontrollable internal bleeding, according to the first lawsuit filed in the US District of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In that case, the Plaintiff was hospitalized after she took Xarelto for severe gastrointestinal bleeding in 2013. The plaintiff alleges in her Complaint, that Johnson & Johnson knew, or should have known, the risks of “irreversible bleeds” involved.
Xarelto has the same side effects as Pradaxa, which came out in 2010, one year before Xarelto.
Xarelto Lawsuits
According to DrugWatch.com, Johnson & Johnson was also attempting to get the FDA to permit use of the medication as a treatment for patients with sudden reduced blood flow to the heart. However, the FDA rejected that application citing a lack of clinical data to support it. Either Johnson & Johnson is incompetent or criminally negligent, because some experts claimed that some of the trial data was actually missing.
Johnson & Johnson Too Big To Care
Despite all this, Drugwatch maintains that Xarelto’s sales are strong even in the face of lawsuits and FDA denials. As a matter of fact, Xarelto’s sales have exceeded Pradaxa. There are currently no Xarelto recalls to date and Xarelto commercials continue to run on television.
